Krampus: The Dark Companion of the Holiday Season
Krampus is the horned, cloven-hoofed companion of Saint Nicholas, and he has haunted Alpine winter celebrations for centuries. His name comes from the Old High German word Krampen, meaning “claw,” and his appearance descends from pre-Christian Alpine winter rituals and horned nature spirits. When the Church folded these wild figures into the story of Saint Nicholas, Krampus became the punishing counterpart to the gift-giving saint.
Saint Nicholas rewards good children on December 5th, the eve of his feast day. Krampus handles everyone else. He carries a bundle of birch switches for swatting naughty children and sometimes a sack or basket in which the worst offenders are stuffed and carried away (as is the case with our design). The pairing creates a simple moral system of reward and punishment.
The Terrifying Art of Krampus Postcards
The most striking visual record of Krampus comes from a wave of postcard art produced in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Austrian and German printers turned out thousands of Krampuskarten, and the artwork did not soften the monster. Artists showed a towering, shaggy figure with curved horns, a gaping mouth, and an unnaturally long red tongue.
Many cards depict Krampus looming over terrified children, brandishing his switch or dragging a screaming victim by the ankle. Others show him stuffing children into his basket, leading weeping youngsters into the snow, or chasing young women with a sly, mischievous grin. The harsh reds, blacks, and lurid greens give the images a strange blend of menace and humor, and the cards remain prized collector’s items today.
Krampus has stepped far beyond the Alps. Austrian Krampuslauf parades draw thousands each December, and the 2015 film Krampus introduced the creature to a wide audience as a holiday horror icon. He appears in comics, video games, and mountains of merchandise, offering a dose of spooky folklore to an otherwise polished holiday season.
